Transanal haemorrhoidal dearterialisation (THD) is a surgical technique available for the treatment of haemorrhoids.  It may also go under the name Doppler guided haemorrhoid artery ligation.

THD uses a purpose built ultrasound probe to locate the arteries, which can then be sutured to reduce the inflow of blood into the haemorrhoids.

This procedure is used in some patients with haemorrhoids, particularly those which are not large or prolapsing. Many patients will have quite significant pain for the first few days as well as a persistent feeling of the need to defecate.

The surgery is usually performed as a day only procedure under general anaesthetic. Simple painkillers like Panadol and Nurofen may be adequate although we will provide you with stronger medication for more severe pain.
