Polypectomy
If polyps are detected at colonoscopy they can usually be removed at the time of the procedure. Polypectomy involves passing a wire loop called a snare, around the polyp and either cutting or cauterising the base of the polyp. The polyp is retrieved and usually sent for pathology testing.

There is a small chance of bleeding after polypectomy. If this occurs it is most likely to happen 1-2 weeks after the procedure. Polypectomy also increases the chance of perforation of the colon, especially if a large or flat polyp is removed.

Some polyps may not be suitable for colonoscopic removal and can require surgical treatment.
